NIE is a tax number for a foreigner in Spain, a non-resident identification number that is needed to conduct financial activities in Spain. Having a NIE is mandatory for any official transaction. The document is issued by the Spanish Migration Service.
The NIE is issued for 90 days. It indicates the full name. foreigner, date of birth, nationality and the unique number itself – it is assigned only once and does not change throughout the entire time. If in the future it becomes necessary to renew the foreigner’s number or get a residence permit in Spain, the foreigner will receive the same combination.
To obtain a foreigner number, you need to have a reason: buying real estate or a car, opening a bank account, registering a business.
Why do you need a NIE in Spain?
Russians will need to apply for a NIE in Spain if you plan to do business in Spain, buy a home, apply for a mortgage, obtain a residence permit or a long-term student visa. Also, a foreigner’s number in Spain may be needed to pay taxes, receive salaries, driver’s licenses, and insurance. In addition, the NIE serves as an identity document in Spain.
How to get a NIE in Spain on its territory
The NIE in Spain can be obtained on its territory.
- Select a province and make an appointment online with the migration services.
- Fill out an application (form EX-15), which can be downloaded on the website.
- Confirm the need to obtain a NIE, for example, when purchasing real estate – this will be a reserve contract.
- Documents: international passport and copies of all pages, 2 photographs 3*4, receipt of payment of the state fee of about 10 € (can be found on the website or taken during the visit).
Your representative can also apply for a NIE under a power of attorney. The application review period is 5-10 days.
How to get a NIE at the Spanish Consulate in Moscow
To obtain a NIE at the Spanish Consulate, first of all, you need to make an appointment. Working hours of the department that deals with registration of NIE in Spain: 9:00-13:30 from Monday to Friday.
Documents for the NIE can only be submitted to the Consulate General of Spain in Moscow in person.
Step-by-step action plan:
- Fill out the EX-15 application and print it in 2 copies. There is no need to sign – the signature is placed in the presence of a consular officer.
- Make a copy of the first page of your passport and attach it to the original.
- Attach justification for the need to obtain a NIE.
- Pay the fee at the cash desk of the Consulate General of Spain in Moscow (10 € in rubles at the current exchange rate).
