Applications for municipal assistance of up to 1,500 euros have begun for university students from Torrevieja

The City Hall of Torrevieja, through the Department of Youth Affairs, has opened applications for municipal assistance for university students for the 2025/2026 academic year. The announcement, published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Alicante (BOP), provides a maximum budget of 200,000 euros and will allow individual benefits of up to 1,500 euros to cover part of the basic costs associated with university studies. Assistance can be used to pay for enrollment, purchase textbooks and travel on intercity public transport to visit an educational institution.

The application period for this assistance will be 10 working days, starting on September 1. Applications can be submitted in person at the General Office of the Municipality of Torrevieja or electronically through the official website of the municipality. The full text of the rules, application forms and all information regarding the procedure are available on the official website and through the official channels of the Municipality of Torrevieja.

Who can receive municipal assistance

This assistance is intended for young people under the age of 35 who, during the 2025/2026 academic year, have completed formal studies at universities in Spain in a bachelor’s or equivalent program or in an official master’s program, either full-time or part-time.

Applicants must be registered in Torrevieja and maintain this status continuously for the two years immediately preceding the submission of the application. In addition, the per capita family income must not exceed €17,000 per year and the academic requirements outlined in the conditions must be met. Among these requirements, there is a minimum entrance score or a GPA of at least 5, depending on whether the application is for the first year of university, subsequent courses or a formal master’s degree.

What expenses can be reimbursed?

Municipal assistance may cover the costs associated with paying for enrollment at the university, provided that supporting documents are provided both about its registration and about the payment made by the student. The purchase of textbooks that are directly related to the subjects studied during the academic period is also subject to subsidization.

How applications will be assessed

Applications will be assessed through a competitive selection process with a maximum score of 21. When determining the scores, the economic, family and academic circumstances of the applicants will be taken into account, as well as the characteristics of the disciplines studied and the distance between Torrevieja and the locality in which the educational institution is located. The assessment criteria include per capita income in the family, unemployment of any family member, status of a large or single-parent family, presence of disability and certain circumstances requiring special protection.

Academic performance, form and level of study will also be taken into account. In this section, the highest scores will be awarded for full-time versus distance learning, for studying in an official master’s program, as well as in the final year of the program. The distance between Torrevieja and the educational institution to which the student has to regularly travel will also be one of the criteria when determining the final grade.
