In euro terms, that was an increase of approximately 6% in nominal terms compared with the previous year. Spain was among the countries with the fastest growth in household wealth, alongside Poland, Ireland and Sweden.

Government debt and property values in Spain

Spain’s gross government debt exceeded 100% of GDP in 2025. The same was true of Japan, Italy, the United States, France, Canada, Belgium and the United Kingdom.

The value of Spanish households’ property relative to GDP fell by around 10% in 2025 compared with 2024. The ratio continued to move closer to its 25-year average, although it remained above that level. Sustained investment in production and measures to boost competitiveness will be important for raising productivity and ensuring that asset values are supported by real income, particularly as financing costs rise.

The global balance sheet reaches a record level

In 2025, the global balance sheet of assets and liabilities reached nearly $1.8 quadrillion (around €1.546 quadrillion), up from $1.7 quadrillion a year earlier. Household net wealth also hit a record $570 trillion (around €490 trillion). A substantial share of the increase came from higher valuations of existing assets: only 20% of wealth growth was attributable to real capital formation.

McKinsey says the eurozone is moving towards a period of prolonged stagnation, with productivity growth close to zero, weaker aggregate demand and high household savings. The average personal savings rate in the eurozone reached 15.1% in 2025. Asset values, however, followed different paths across the region.

Rising stock markets helped increase household wealth in the United States, while falling property prices affected its growth in several European countries. According to McKinsey, household wealth per capita, adjusted for purchasing power parity, fell by 2.6% in Germany and 1.5% in France.

Europe needs more private investment

One of the obstacles to productivity growth in Europe is the shortfall in corporate investment compared with the United States. McKinsey estimates the gap at around $700 billion a year, or about 3% of Europe’s GDP. Investment in productive assets, including infrastructure, machinery, equipment and intellectual property, remains below the global average and pre-pandemic levels.

At the same time, household and non-financial corporate debt in the eurozone remains relatively balanced and closer to its 25-year average than in other major economies.

Four possible scenarios for the global economy

The McKinsey report outlines four possible scenarios: accelerating productivity growth, sustained inflation, a return to prolonged stagnation, and a balance-sheet reset that could involve falling asset values and a recession.

The report’s authors consider productivity acceleration the only scenario that could support high asset valuations with real economic growth while also protecting accumulated wealth.

[1

post-2010","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-immigration
["GET
